I am a 27-year-old female. For the last year or so, I've been dealing (on and off) with extremely itchy bumps. It seems like every few weeks they will flare up and get red and look almost like little blisters or zits. Then the itching will subside and the bumps will reduce in size and return to a normal color. They are most itchy and prevalent on my elbows, but they are also present on my back, chest, the front of my knees and upper thighs, and the top of my buttocks.
After treating them on my own with eczema creams without success, I did some research online and discovered my symptoms seem to match those of herpetiformis dermatitis. I went in for a biopsy with my dermatologist and it came back as a food allergy, but the nurse said it was negative for HD.
In my research, I read that if the biopsy is conducted by extracting skin directly from the lesion (this is what my dermatologist did), it could result in a false negative.
My questions are these:
1. If it is HD and I received a false negative, would the path lab still show some sort of allergy present?
2. Should I return to my dermatologist and ask for a second biopsy, or should I get a 2nd opinion from another doctor?
3. Are there any other food allergic reactions which symptoms would present in a similar fashion?
