Itchy Rash On Face, Nose, Eyebrows And Cheek With Remaining Lesion After Flaking Skin. No Help From Cortizone And Antibiotics. Suggest

I have a rash on my face that looks abput the size pennies around my nose. Eyebrows and left cheek. Cortizone seems to make it worse. Sometimes it itches abd the skin will flake away but the lesion will stay there and build up again. My dermo put me on antibiotics but it is not helping. Should I seek more invasive treatment ?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,

Rash on the face, eyebrows and cheeks can be an erythematous skin disease.
Itching suggests an infection especially fungal infection.
Anti-fungals can be tried for a couple of days.
However, if the rash is not responding to antifungals, other possibilities have to be looked for.
You have not mentioned the nature of antibiotics that you have been prescribed.
Is the antibiotic used topical or oral?
use the medication for couple of days.
If no response occurs or if there is worsening of symptoms, the lesion has to be reviewed.
A skin biopsy from the site of rash may have to be done.
Itchy rash can be seen in psoriasis, pityriasis, eczema, or even seborrheic keratosis.
Consult your dermatologist if you do not respond to the antibiotic preparation for further work up.

Thanks and take care
