July 29. 2016 Dear Back Pain: I Have Lumbar Spondylitis

July 29. 2016

Dear Back Pain:

I have lumbar Spondylitis and lower back spinal stenosis ( at least that's what the doctor's tell me after numerous MRi's and other tests. This week has been especially bad. I use a walker when I go to the store, etc/. This week when I went to the library (once), I was been extremely afraid because my legs skake so much, I'm afraid I'm going to fall which has happened several times previously. Before I got this bad, I was able to at least go to the store, the library, and my dad's house. It began one morning (June, 2008) when upon waking I was unable to straighten up . It' been downhill since then. The pain is shaper in my left hip area, although it often bothers my right hip area. I've had my hips Xrayed. The doctors say that, while my hips are somewhat deteriorated, surgery would not solve the problem. Rather, they say, it's a nerve in my spine that travels to my hip area while it being impinged on by my out of whack spine.
I have tried everything possible: physical therapy, cortisone injections, and meditation, to name a few. None has worked. One of my doctors suggested surgery (I am told he is the premier back doctor in Cincinnati). But what I have read about a surgical fix, it seems that besides that besides the surgery, the Uncertainty of the outcome, and the gruesome recovery period I am putting this off for now at least. Besides I am on Social Security and I don' think I could afford it at this time
I have a treadmill in my apartment. I use it almost every day and my hips don't hurt while I am on it. However, I don't know the long rage effects of using it. I have read several articles which advocate the use of aerobic exercise for my condition. I sure do feel better mentally and am able to get things done (take a shower, wash the dishes, vacuum, and various other clean up chores which I do not feel like doing before doing the treadmill).
What suggestions can you offer me?
I am about at the end of my rope! I would be glad to try any suggestions you have to offer.

Thank you very much,
Michael Goetz
