Knee Injury, Swelling, Dark Bruise, Pain On Touching. Did I Break My Patella?

I hit my knee really hard on the ground yesterday in gym. My knee is a little swollen, and has a really dark, odd shaped bruise (not a circle bruise...). It hurts to touch, but it does not hurt to bend my leg. I want to make sure i didn t crack my patella or anything. Do you think it will be ok? what should i do besides ice?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi
Due to injury, haematoma(collection of blood) has formed.
It will subside gradually in course of time.
Please take skeletal muscle relaxant, antibiotic tablets.
Give rest to the joint.
If the swelling still persists after few days, please take X ray of knee joint -AP and lateral view and confirm any bony injury.
Wish you good health and speedy recovery

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query,
From description it seems to be soft tissue injury . Swollen dark, odd shaped bruise might be due to haematoma formation(collection of blood).
You need an x-ray to rule out any bony injury.
I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.Beside icing and elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful
