Knee Pain, Uncomfortable While Running And Pressing. Planning To See Orthosurgeon. Correct Treatment?

I'm a 58 yr old female with progressively worsening knee pain usually with stairs, esp my L knee. I'm 5'6" and 116# so I'm not overweight. I had a knee injury when I was doing step aerobics about 15 yrs ago that resolved with time and rest. I typically exercise, though infrequently on the treadmill and some strength training. Running and leg presses or squats is uncomfortable on the knees. I'm planning to see an orthosurgeon for an evaluation and recommendation hopefully for exercises and not surgery.
