Lightheaded And Dizziness. Diagnosed Heart Murmur Which Was Present Since Childhood. Suggested ECG And Blood Tests. Anything Serious?
Hi
My daugher had a heart murmur when she was a baby and was told she would grow out of it. Over the past 6 months or so she has been feeling light headed so I took her to the doctor last week and they have said that she still has the murmer and will be having an ECG and blood tests taken this week. I am concerned as to what could be the problem, plus if there is there isn't a problem with her heart what could be causing the dizzyness.
Thanks for your health concerns over your daughter. As a matter of fact, innocent flow murmurs are extremely common in childhood and most don't have a clinical significance; however, if there are symptoms that potentially could be cardiac in origin, further investigations are needed. A complete physical, basic blood tests and EKG sound like a good start, and depending on those a heart ultrasound or echocardiogram might or not be warranted.
Cardiac causes of dizziness include arrhythmias, heart failure, congenital heart disease and valvular problems amongst others. There are a host of other non-cardiac causes of dizziness, many of them actually related to the nervous system.
Hope this is useful, wish you and your daughter the best health,
