Little Abrasion After Stray Dog Scratched The Knees. Cleaned With Lukewarm Water And Dettol. Further Treatment Required?

Hi.. while feeding dogs, one of a stray dog accidentally scratches me below right knee.. I was wearing a short that time.. There was a little abrasion and no bleeding take place.. within 5 minutes I had washed the area with lukewarm water and dettol hand wash for about 3 to 5 min . . After that I had applied dettol n quadriderm tube.. After 30 min I again clean that area for about 15 min with the same but this time with cold water.. Do I require any treatment. ????. Dog seems 2 b a healthy one but was a stray...

Actually that scratch was so small that I have to make an identification mark by ball pen in order to remember the area... Next day after taking bath I had been to doctor but we both were unable to locate where the scratch was....

Do I require a treatment ??

Welcome to HCM!

After reading your question carefully I realize that the abrasion was small in size, difficult to locate, and below knee, making it grade I category...But the important point is that still you must get your self vaccinatd with anti rabies serum, you will require fewer injections compared to usual ones.

It is important that you take treatment
--because rabies is fatal condition if developed once,
-because there is a protocol that if dog bite is un provoked you should get vaccinated
-because the dog was a stray one, means was not vaccinated for rabies itself
-because you will not be able to trace and keep a check on the dog for next ten days or so and see if he dosent develop signs of rabies!
& -Because you should not take a risk...
At least I would go for vaccines...

You have cleaned the wound in the right way, now go and meet the doctor and ASK for vaccines...taking vaccine won't harm you in any way!!

Hope this helps you in your issue

Hello,

You have been scratched by a stray dog. If the scratch is not by the dog's teeth you need not worry. However if the dog scratched you with its teeth, then you need to receive anti rabies vaccination. Rabies is a life threatening disease with no treatment. in case of stray dogs it is very difficult to determine if they are rabid. Anti rabies vaccination is a course of 5 vaccines over a span of 1 month. Keep a watch on the dog if it is possible. If he is alive after 10 days then it means the dog was not rabid and you need not take the remaining doses of vaccine.

Hope that helps.
