Long ago, twenty years ago, during training, I remember learning that we should always add potassium (assuming a normal or low potassium) to a bag of NS or D51/2 NS when given IVF hydration. I believe it has something to do with better absorption. Thus 10meq was recommended to add to the bag in all patients with a normal K+
