Lung Collapsed. Fine Needle Biopsy Done. Treatment?
We have a relative that had a lung mass. A fine needle biopsy was performed and her lung collapsed. A chest tube was inserted and the lung expanded. The tube was scheduled to be removed and clamped for a few hours and seemed fine. The lung has collapsed again. What would be the course of treatment? Insert a second chest tube? What are the risk factors and what questions should we ask?
Hi, Lung collapse with pneumothorax does occure sometimes after lung biopsy. In such cases since the collapsed lung is diseased it takes some time to expand and does not expand spontaneously. ICD tube with high flow oxygen needs to be administered. There is no need of second tube. Risk factors depend on patient's history, smoking status, any associated co morbidity, any secondary infection and the condition of collapsed lung. Regards Dr. Mishra
