How would you interpret the following path report excerpt:
FINAL MICROSCOPIC DIAGNOSIS:
Uterine cervix, polypectomy A small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma.
Comment: Masses of mitotically active cells with very high N/C ratios,
nuclear molding, and positivity for AE1/AE3, chromogranin, and
synaptophysin comprise this polypoid mass. The tumor is CK20 negative.
Assuming that the patient has no primary tumor in the lung (which would be
very unlikely), the findings are those of small cell neuroendocrine
carcinoma, which is a rare but well—recognized type of cervical carcinoma
with a propensity to behave aggressively.
