Mild Pain In Chest Area When Flexing The Muscles, Heaviness In Chest With Normal Breathing. History Of Being Hit By Elbow To Chest. Advice

During a basketball game I got hit on the right side of the chest by someone's elbow. It did hurt at the time but got better after a few minutes. It has been two weeks without any pain in the area but the last few days I feel mild pain in the area I was hit, especially when I flex peck muscle for any reason or get the hiccups. If I take a deep breath the pain is even milder. During normal breathing i just feel the area "heavy".

I mostly ask due to the delay the pain appeared after I was hit

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From the given description, I suspect that the cause of your pain during deep breathing is due a rib fracture or an intercostal myagia.

An xray of the injured area is necessary to rule out a rib fracture.

Soft tissue lesions involving the muscles will settle down spontaneously with time.

Use analgesics & muscle relaxants as needed, apply moist heat fomentation and avoid lying on the injured side.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
