My 66 yr old mother who has no history of hypertension, was c/o flashing lights 3 days ago. I was out of town, had her call her optometrist and was seen urgently. At their office, bp was checked and was found to be hypertensive, was checked 3 times and bp read no less than 200/100. The optometrist immediately concerned wanted her to go to ER. She was given clonidine, and lisinopril in ER, ct of head was negative, no contrast. After three hours in ER her bp gradually decreased to 140/60's. She was dc'd home with no meds, and told to follow up with her pcp and eye doctor. The optometrist also told me during exam he found bleeding behind left eye. This am she was referred to eye specialist and did a more thorough exam, and he thought vitreous detachment was cause of spot and bleed noted on left eye. He said to follow up in one month to reevaluate. Her only complaints (which she rarely complains) is intermittent temporal headaches and some blurred vision. she also has beginning cataracts. Today her bp has maintained between 150/50's-160/60 and she is to keep a log until she sees her pcp next week. My concern is the sudden increase in bp out of nowhere. The only other symptoms she c/o are more frequency at night which she will see her gynecologist this week. She has been studying more frequently and reading more and I do know she strains her eyes. Her activity was no different than other days and only takes supplements that are not new to her regimen.
