My Children's Father Was Told He Had Hep A But

My children's father was told he had hep A but now they say it isn't hep A. Test results showed his liver is very damaged with high enzymes. He has incredible fatigue, loss of appetite, pain in back, rashes that show up on his leg and abdomen- raised red- then disappears. We don't have specialist in our area. He is a retired lt. col in the Marine Corps and has been in incredible shape. Now he looks wiped out most of the time. They say his liver is in bad shape but he hasn't had a CAT or MRI. What are the possibilities? He also does not drink alcohol at all. He does work as a plant manager over seeing genetically engineered plants (strawberry, raspberries). Again I'm wondering what he might be dealing with.
