hi, treatment depends on staging of the cancer.
since they preforming a surgery,
then there are good chances that it might be still in early stages.
even after a surgery, they will put him on a chemotherapy
just hope for the best. and everything will be fine.

My dad went into surgery this past riday. When they cut him open the found that the mass of the cancer was bigger than they expected so they had to removed a lot more. They sent in the mass in for testing. We will not get the results for about another 4 days or so. I feel like because they found more than expected that the chances of it being a stage 1 have dropped. It's horrible that I'm thinking this way. I don't really know how to feel but just to keep praying for him and hope everything turns out to be fine.

Hello Diana, I understand your concern for your father's condition requiring surgery.But You need to understand the fact that in cancer treatment the most important criteria determining outcome is the stage of presentation.
As your father is undergoing an upfront surgery for his colon cancer,it is likely at an operable stage,which is assessed before surgery by clinical examination and imaging(Contrast CT of abdomen usually).The work-up also excludes a widely disseminated disease.If a successful surgery is possible ,the need for further treatment like Chemotherapy would be determined by the pathological report of the removed tumour.
I can assure you of one thing that in the present era ,treatment of colon cancer ,even for late stage disease ,has reasonably improved results.Good wishes from me.
