hi, treatment depends on staging of the cancer.

since they preforming a surgery,

then there are good chances that it might be still in early stages.

even after a surgery, they will put him on a chemotherapy

just hope for the best. and everything will be fine.

My dad went into surgery this past riday. When they cut him open the found that the mass of the cancer was bigger than they expected so they had to removed a lot more. They sent in the mass in for testing. We will not  get the results for about another 4 days or so. I feel like because they found more than expected that the chances of it being a stage 1 have dropped. It's horrible that I'm thinking this way. I don't really know how to feel but just to keep praying for him and hope everything turns out to be fine.

Hi Diana,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic forum.
Treatment of colon cancer depends on the stage of the cancer, the type of lesion and the age of the patient.
Surgical treatment remains the main modality for Stage 0, Stage 1 and Stage 2 colon cancer. Adjuvant chemotherapy is also required for some patients in Stage 2 and all patients with Stage 3 and Stage 4 colon cancer.
Staging of the cancer requires a clinical and surgical assessment. The clinical stage may have to be revised following a surgical staging and it may be moved to a lower or higher stage depending on the results.
As explained earlier, his need for chemotherapy will be primarily determined by the stage of colon cancer that your father has.

Hi....Diana..,
welcome to HCM..,
Thanks for query...,
Chemotherapy is depend upon the stageing of the cancer....
Normally ...Surgery will be do only early stage of cancer...,
2nd and 3rd stage of cancer...Surgery and Radiotherapy...is
choice of treatment.....,
but chemotherapy is last resort....to reduce the severity....,
generally advise in Metastasis stage (final stage)
So your Dad have only 1st and 2nd stage....hence it could be curable
don't bother...follow as per your doctor suggestions and goodluck..
consult good Oncologist.......o.k

General Surgeon Dr. Sundeep Kumar's  Response
Hello Diana, I understand your concern for your father's condition requiring surgery. But You need to understand the fact that in cancer treatment the most important criteria determining outcome is the stage of presentation.
As your father is undergoing an upfront surgery for his colon cancer,it is likely at an operable stage, which is assessed before surgery by clinical examination and imaging(Contrast CT of abdomen usually). The work-up also excludes a widely disseminated disease. If a successful surgery is possible ,the need for further treatment like Chemotherapy would be determined by the pathological report of the removed tumour.
I can assure you of one thing that in the present era ,treatment of colon cancer ,even for late stage disease ,has reasonably improved results.Good wishes from me.
