My Husband And I Have Been Married For 18 Years

My husband and I have been married for 18 years and together for 20 years. During this time, we have been 100% faithful to each other. Recently, he was diagnosed with herpes 2, then I was tested and I am positive for herpes 1 and 2. I have not seen any type of breakout on my body and have never had a cold sore inside or outside the mouth. My husband recently had two, small red bumps on his penis, which triggered him to see his doctor. My first question is, can this really show up out of the blue, after 20 years together (I do believe him when he says he hasn't been with anyone) and what do we do now. My Ob/gyn said I have antibodies built up and I do not need to do anything. My husband is on medication now for this current outbreak. Does he need to stay on medication permanently or only when there is an outbreak?
