Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband was diagnosed with NPH in 2009 and has had 3 shunts placed. The 1st shunt worked for about 10 days when the tubing clogged. The 2nd shunt did nothing to improve symptoms. The 3rd shunt was placed and has been a disaster. We have been 4 yrs post 3rd shunt and symptoms have deteriorated significantly. I'm wondering what the "end-stage" symptoms are for NPH and what kind of prognosis we may have. He has not seen his neurosurgeon in 1 1/2 years because we were told he couldn't do anything else and that he would be bedridden within a year. He is still ambulatory, but has significant difficulty ambulating. He is completely incontinent--bowel and bladder. And, I'm proud to say I've been able to keep him home for the entire time. I don't want to place him in an institution as long as I can care for him here.
I'm sorry this has been so detailed but my question is what further deterioration do I have to look forward to before the end? I'm handling things fairly well and do have someone to help me a few hours a week so I'm just trying to prepare mentally for the reality of the situation.
Thank you for any feedback.
