My Husband Was Put On Vancomyacin (spelling) For A Staph
My husband was put on vancomyacin (spelling) for a staph infection that turned out to be mssa. After the first dose he could not urinate and was catherized - first time in his life. He is 67. A second dose was administered before blood cultures ( take 2 days) came back with mssa results. He was put on nafcillin thereafter - underwent L5 back surgery from a MRI which supposedly showed a pus pocket that turned out to be negative from a wound culture of the mssa. Blood cultures were done each day and came out positive for mssa the second 24 hours. After submitting to another test - a TEE to check for infection behind the heart on the valves - which also came out negative. He was monitored on a heart floor then released the next day with a pik line to continure the nafcillin at home. He has been catherized for 11 days. Presently tonight - 10 pm they have stopped the nafcillin because he has broken out in a rash. He is sleeping now. The nurse gave him a Benadryl but after she left he was experiencing breathing issues (he was diagnosed with asthma as a child but does not use medication just has a inhaler which isn't used very much). With all the complications from back surgery and the allergic reaction to nafcillin what are his chances of urinating after this catheter is removed? The swelling in his body has got to affect his prostrate. He was already experienced water retention from surgery pain, lack of movement and the drugs to put him under. I understand that there is a way to prepare for urinating after the catheter is removed by pinching off the catheter and ????? Help Anna Munholand
