My Husband Woke Up Suddenly With Pains In His Back

My husband woke up suddenly with pains in his back and then vomited, I have been around people with kidney stones and this is what it reminded me of, gave him a pain pill which he has for back pain, rested the rest of the night, no blood in urine, no difficulty in urinating. I have been having him urinate in a strainer lined with coffee filters, as I know kidney stones can be very small. Still uncomfortable this am but after breakfast he tried to vomit but kept himself from doing so, the pain started coming back so I gave him another pain pill. We are 2 hrs. Away from a hospital as we are summering in West yellowstone, mt., however do the systoms I am describing related to a kidney stone? No blood in urine. Thank you
