My Son Has A Hurting In His Side And Back

My son has a hurting in his side and back which moves from one to the other. How can one tell if it is a gas pocket or perhaps kidney stone? He has taken an laxative and an antiacid. It does not hurt when sitting down. Years ago he had stones but there was blood present but not now.
