Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son has been coughing for about 10 weeks. The pediatrician prescribed a z pac which did not help. He also ordered a sinus xray but the radiologist report showed it as clear. My son went to the allergist who redid the skin prick test he had in elementary school years ago and he continues to be very allergic to all types of pollen and mold, dust mites etc. The dr. had prescribed nasal steroid sprays years ago but we were unable to use them since he got bloody noses. As a result for major parts of the year he snorts. This year in the spring the relentless coughing started. The allergist suspects some type of infection was passed around at school and coupled with the drainage from his sinus' he got a bad infection. He is now on 2 medications amoxicillian and amoxicillian clav. He had 4 doses but we had to stop due to rash, fever, and stomach pain. The dr. wanted to have him stop until the fever passed to make sure it wasn't from the antibiotics. Now he has resumed the antibiotic regime. He had his 5th dose tonight. We were instructed to take the antibiotics for 20 days. He still however has not yet stopped coughing. I am still hoping it will kick in soon. Can it take several days before the coughing subsides? He is scheduled to see a pulmonologist in mid August who ordered a chest xray. In addition the allergist did a couple of breathing tests because he wanted the information before prescribing the antibiotic. Any thoughts?
