My Spouse Injured His Leg & Has Had Excruciating Pain

My spouse injured his leg & has had excruciating pain in leg. Per phone with doctor, said to take Aleve. We bought a knee brace which gives some support & has helped. He carried our 3 yr old grandson for quite a bit of time, about 8 days, 6 weeks ago. It is some better but he continues to walk with a limp & continues with Advil b/c he found it to be better. It seems that it should be okay by now. He is 66, 175# and 6'3". Do what would an x-ray or some other test be warranted?
