My teenaged son swallowed a sharp tortilla chip at lunch today. He was in severe pain as it slowly made its way down his esophagus. He's a tough kid but the level of pain he experienced was scary. I finally urged him to eat a bite of refried beans hoping it would help the chip move along a bit faster, which it did. He literally felt the severe pain every inch of its journey down his throat. What symptoms should we watch for in terms of a serious injury? Is there anything he should do to speed the healing or at least anything to avoid?
