Noticed Painful And Itchy Little Red Bump On Left Areola While Breastfeeding. Can It Be Harmful For Child?
I am breastfeeding a 9 week old baby and noticed a painful little red bump on my left areola next to my nipple. I am worried about my breast milk giving her infection if this bump is infectious. It is painful, itching and peeling. What ia wrong with me?
Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic. I would gladly help you.
As you mentioned that your left areola has developed a bump which is painful and peeling.
It seems that you maybe suffering from mastitis or may be developing an abscess at that site. At times, when the breast if full and not emptied completely everytime the baby feeds, then that becomes a nidus of infection.
I would suggest that you should get evaluated by your physician. You can use warm compresses to ease the pain and swelling that you have developed. Your physician may prescribe antibiotics depending on his examination.
If there is no crack or pus coming out of your breast, it would be fine to feed the baby and feeding the baby may help ease the swelling of the breast.
But if there is crack/bleeding or pus coming out or your areola is painful while the baby feeds, you can use a nipple shield or feed from the breast which is not infected and continue to pump and discard the milk from the infected breast until the infection is resolved and till then supplement with a formula.
