On Lasix, Prilosec, Glipizide, Norvasc, Asperne, Sinemet, Trazadone, And Pravasatin. Feel Sleepy. Side Effect?

My 88 year old mother, is on
Morning, Lasix, Prilosec, Glipizide, Norvasc, cozaar, coreg, Aspern
4:00 2 more Glipizide
nighttime- Sinemet, Trazadone, Ultram, pravasatin
She wakes up fine and after she takes her morning pills she is so sleepy she has to go to bed.
I think she is over medicated...what is causing her sleepyness?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Dear friend,

Thanks for posting your query on this website. I can fully appreciate your concern for your mother's problem.

From the details, I presume that your mother is suffering from Diabetes, hypertension and Parkinson's disease.

You have not mentioned the reason for which she has been prescribed Trazadone and Ultram. Both these drugs cause drowsiness, sleepiness, confusion etc..

The other cause of her going to sleep in the morning may be hypoglycemia, the symptoms of which do not get manifested in elderly people.

Hence, please do the following :-

1. Test her blood sugar EXACTLY 2 hours after breakfast (even if she is sleeping). Blood Sugar reading less than 70mg% will confirm hypoglycemia. In that event, her morning dose of glipizide will have to be reduced.

2. If blood sugar reading is more than 120, then STOP Trazadone for 4-5 days. If her sleeping problem is resolved, continue with rest of the treatment.

3. If no response, STOP ultram + trazadone and observe the effect.

I am confident that you will certainly benefit from the advice.

May I assure you that I am always available for your assistance and will try my best to cure your condition to the best of my experience and knowledge.

Please feel free to revert back to me with the outcome of the steps advised.

HAVE A NICE DAY AND A SPEEDY RECOVERY.

Fond Regards,

Dr.(Col) R Karanwal
