On Calpol, Ibuprofen For High Temperature In A Child. What Else Can Assist?
Hi, my 4.5 year old has had a high temperature since Sunday (it is now early Friday morning) of 102+. She has croup . She has Calpol and Ibuprofen every few hours during the day. How long can she go on with such a high temperature? I thought it went down after about 48 hours (it does fluctuate, but always goes up high again, particularly at night). She is very down!

You need to get examined your daughter by your doctor. Your doctor may order you some investigation to rule out Malaria Parasite and Typhoid fever. And surely your daughter needs a course of antibiotic to get control over fever and infection. Steam Inhalation and protection from changing climate help you in getting cure quickly.
Continue calpol and Ibuprofen to reduce fever. In high grade fever cold sponging help a lot. Consult your doctor as soon as possible and follow his/her advice.
Best Wishes
Thank you for posting your daughter's worry.
Croup is usually a viral originated diseases (usually parainfluenza virus) but can also be bacterial, allergies, foreign body irritation, acid reflux etc. But it will be interesting to know the vaccination history of your child i.e if she was vaccinated against diphtheria. Never the less if the fever and other symptoms are persisting over 48 hrs despite the in take of calpol and ibuprofen, then an antibiotics needs to be added. Depending on the severity of the other symptoms i.e difficulty breathing, cough etc, the child will need to be hospitalized for oxygenation.
Another possibility is that the temperature is being controlled by the medication but the viral infection is still persisting, so you will need to exercise a little patience about 2-5 days again for the fever to give way. A visit to a pediatrician will be paramount.
Hope this helps
