On Cortisone Injection For Osteoarthritis In Shoulders. On Plaquenil And Naproxen For Inflammatory Arthritis And Sjogrens Syndrome. Long Term Implications?
I have arthritis in my shoulder and have been getting cortisone injections (ac joint) every 3 months for the past year. it is osteo arthritis. I also have "inflammatory" arthritis and sjogrens syndrome which I am taking plaquenil and naproxen for daily. The injections last 2 months but I can only get them every 3 and have been taking low doses of prednisone to cope with the pain and inflammation in order to make it through work every day. How long can I keep getting injections and what are long term implications of getting them?
Hello, Welcome to Healthcaremagic. First of all long term use of any NSAIDS and Steroids are usually not advised. Chronic use of naproxen may cause gastric ulcers even it may cause Myocardial infarction (heart attack ) and stroke. Plaquenil (Hydroxyquinone) is toxic to eye,. It affects the macula (part of retina of eye) of the eye. Plaquenil may cause weight loss, liver failure, muscular weakness. Do not more than 400 mg of plaquenil per day. Over this dose Macular toxicity risk increases slightly. Better to reduce the dose and wise use of these drugs are always helpful. Take care
