On Steroids For Stomach Problem, Now On Mercaptopurine 50mg. What Is This Medicine For ?
I am trying to find out what Mercaptopurine 50mg. is, and I can't seem to get any clear information; accept that it says something about chemotherapy. I was being treated with steroids for stomach problems; than I was weaned off of them. Now, I'm on Mercaptopurine 50mg. I have confidence in my doctor, but I wanted to know what this medicine was for. Can you give me some clarity on this medicine? Thank you. AAAAA
It is used in chronic disease as a steroid sparing agent. I mean to say when either the disease becomes refractory to steroid, or develope side effects from steroid, or becomes steroid dependent.
It's side effects are allergic reactions, rash, diarrhea, pancreatitis , nausea and vomiting, and myelosuppression.
It is started in low dose initially and is increased gradually if there is no side effect or the response required is not achieved. maximum dose is 2 to 2.5 g/kg
