Pain In Knee, Sore After Getting Kick Playing Soccer. Bone Bruise?
I got kicked a few weeks ago in a soccer game right below my knee, almost to my shin. I felt sharp pain but after a while that area was very numb. I keep gettin kicked there in games and practices and I feel terrible stinging pain for a couple minutes. After a while it's very sore. If I gently run my hand over it that area still feels numb but with more pressure it hurts terribly. I've iced it and each time it gets kicked, it swells more and more. So it's been swollen for almost three weeks now. Im not sure if it's just a deep bone bruise or something more. Thanks!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hi and welcome to HCM
According to your description, what you have might be due to shin splints. Shin splints usually result from overuse. Repeated movements of the foot can cause damage where the tibialis muscles attach to the tibia. Soon the edge of the muscles may begin to pull away from the bone. The injured muscle and the bone covering (the periosteum) become inflamed.
I advise you to- 1. Take rest. It plays a key role in decreasing pain and inflammation. 2. Stop doing the activity that caused the problem, at least until their symptoms are under control. 3. Apply cold packs and take anti-inflammatory medications like Motrin to calm pain and inflammation.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and informative and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care.
