Pain In Left Shoulder, Radiating To Upper Back. Tried Advil, Tylenol. Suggestions?

I have had pain in my left upper shoulder now for 5 days. The pain radiates to my upper back/ scapula . It does not limit my range of motion or feel like a muscle/ joint pain. It more feels like a rubber band is placed around my upper arm and shoulder and squeezing my arm causing pain. I am 23 years old and not sure what is going on. Nothing seems to help the pain. I have tried Advil , Tylenol , and muscle relaxers. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
After reading your complaints, you are too young to arrive at a possible diagnosis without investigations. You have not told any history of fall or injury. So Routine blood test, ECG, X-Ray left shoulder joint including scapula and MRI cervical spine will help us to arrive at a diagnosis. If ECG is normal First Orthopedic followed by Nero Surgeon's opinion may be needed. Take immediate steps.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

From your description, the pain that you have seems to be due to a muscle pull or a stress injury to the muscles in the area.

Such pain usually subsides on taking adequate rest, doing a regular hot fomentation in the area and taking a mild pain killer in combination with an effective muscle relaxant. The symptoms are likely to improve over next 4-5 days after appropriate treatment.

I suggest you to try back strengthening exercises by extension of the back muscles which can be taught by your Orthopedician or Physiotherapist. This will help to relieve the possible muscle spasm which causes the tightness.

Wishing you good health.
Regards.
Dr Saurabh Gupta.
