Pain In Middle Finger Joint, Unable To Straighten, Swollen Lump At The Base Of Finger, Locking Of Finger. Suggest

I have a painful middle finger. The middle joint is painful and the finger will not completely straighten. Also, there is a spot at the base of that finger that is like a swollen lump. If I bend that finger, (which does not bend completely, by the way), it locks and I have to force it to open/straighten.
thanks,
Mrs. Lou Powell

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Your description of symptoms typically suggest a TRIGGER FINGER wherein a nodule develops around the tendon of the involved finger and constricting it leading to difficulty & pain during movements.

The conservative management of this condition involves
- Activity modification
- Use of NSAID's for pain control (Advil or Aleve as needed)
- Splinting of MCP joint for a few days until the inflammation settles down
- Injection of corticosteroid into the sheath of the involved tendon at the point of maximum tenderness. This will give very good results in acute presentation.

If all the above measures fail to provide symptom relief, a surgical release may be needed.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
