Pain In Neck And Back, Numb And Tingling Arm, Swallowing Difficulty, Feels Tired, Dizzy, Blurred Vision
Hi, for the past week, I have been neck and back pain . When I turn my head to the left, it hurts and is stiff. My left arm also feels numb and a bit tingly at times. My whole head is hurting, like a numbing feeling and my head feels hot. I m also having difficulty swallowing and at times feel sick to my stomach. I feel tired, sort of dizzy and vision is somewhat blurry.
1) Symptoms mentioned by you are suggestive of "Lateral Medullary Syndrome".
2) In this syndrome, patient may suffer from dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing), slurred speech, ataxia, facial pain, vertigo, nystagmus, Horner syndrome, diplopia (double vision), and possibly palatal myoclonus.
3) Clinical manifestation resulting from occlusion of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) or one of its branches or of the vertebral artery.
4) You have not mentioned your other associated symptoms.
5) You should go for x-ray cervical region, CT/ MRI scan of neck with medulla & pons
If your problem is acute, arise after awakening, it might because you slept on your left side without a pillow and with your left arm below head or hanged aside of your bed. If your condition not arose after awakening then you might have a history of trauma/lifting heavy object or a sudden shock to your neck in past week.
You are suffering from symptoms of muscle spasm and nerve compression. If you provide me further details of your condition and its history of onset, it can be better explained and treated.
Your complaints are suggestive of Cervical spondylosis with presence of osteophytes..... This can be managed symptomatically by cervical traction therapy following short wave diathermy. then myofascial release(MFR) for neck and upper back. Tens (Trans cutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)..... neck stability exercises and some gentle stretching with in the pain limit.
Physiotherapy treatment as mentioned above can be added with some calcium tablets including vitamin D, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAID) (If required) and nerve vitamin tablets gives maximum benefit. Wish your pain comes down soon..
