Pain In The Left Side Of Hip Radiating To Leg. Knee Swollen. No Help From Anti Inflammatories. Suggestions?

My husband has pain on the left side of his hip and travels down his leg, behind his knee seems swollen. He has been taking all kinds of anti inflamitories and his pain seems to be getting worse. He is still working operating a large loader and he just has a few more weeks work this year and he doesn't want to take time off so he suffers all day and comes home almost crying with the pain. He has had it for about 3 weeks.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description of symptoms, I suspect that the cause of your husbands pain could be either in the Hip joint or in the Lumbar spine.

An xray of the hip joint will exclude any bony pathology, if it is negative, an MRI scan is needed to rule out any soft tissue problems in the hip joint.

An MRI scan of the Lumbar spine is necessary to know any disc protrusion causing compression over the nerve root leading to pain in the leg.

So, I suggest you to consult an orthopedic surgeon for a detailed clinical evaluation and further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
