Pain In The Thigh After Playing Soccer. Why?

My son is fourteen and he plays soccer. Last week, on the third day in a row of soccer, he felt a sharp pain toward the top front of his thigh. He sat out the rest of the game and did not play any serious sport for the rest of the week. Today, he played soccer again and felt similar pain (but less severe) after kicking. He was able to continue to run, play and even kick but would experience pain when he took shots or tried to make a hard pass.
