Pain In Upper Right Arm And Shoulder, Clicking Sound While Raising Arm. What Could Be This?
I have moderate to severe pain in my upper right arm and shoulder for about 4 months. making it difficult to sleep at night on my right shoulder. I thought that I possible over used my right arm doing some heavy work and exercise. When I raise my right arm over my head I hear a clicking sound accompanied by pain. It feels like a rotator cuff problem but I feel the pain all the way to my elbow. I am 71 years of age in good physical condition with some chronic back pain at times
The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be due to: 1. Rotator cuff injury 2. Dislocation of shoulder joint 3. Bursitis 4. Nephropathy 5. Injury or spasm of the soft tissue around shoulder joint.
You can apply local pain killer spray like Diclofenac and take NSAIDs with muscle relaxants. If symptoms still persist, visit your physician for proper clinical examination to rule out any pathology in the the shoulder joint like. Investigations like X ray of shoulder, complete blood count, estimation of blood pressure and blood sugar levels will be helpful. Wishing you a good health. Take care.
This tendon is a part of the rotator cuff and gets compressed against the acromion process during overhead activities resulting in pain, also called impingement syndrome.
A trial of conservative management can be tried in the form of * Physiotherapy which involves strengthening of the rotator cuff muscles and improving the range of motion. * Analgesic & Anti inflammatory medications as needed * An ocassional steroid injection may help in few cases
An MRI scan of the shouder joint will give a perfect diagnosis of your problem.
Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
Pain in shoulder and clicking sound while raising arm could be due to degenerative arthritic changes in your shoulder. Xray will be helpful to see the arthritic changes.I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. You may get the Xray/ MRI of the area affected under his/her guidance.
Hope this helps you.You can cosult me again directly through my profile http://www.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-saurabh-gupta/64132
