Paraplegic For Years, Use Colostomy Bag, Bowels Do Not Seem To Empty Fully, Have To Wait For Long Time Post Irrigation. Reason?
Hi, I m a spinally injured guy who has been paraplegic for 16 yrs. I opted for a colostomy bag and I am trying to irrigate however, my bowel does not fully empty and decides to empty about 4oclock in the day. I wait for approximately 1hr from when I begin irrigating until I leave the bathroom. Is there a valid reason for this?
The reason for this can be bowel inertia. Due to deranged nerve supply, the normal peristaltic movement of bowel is hampered. It leads to incomplete emptying of bowel. In long duration it might lead to pseudo diverticula formation which also leads to incomplete emptying.
