Persisting Insomnia Despite Psychiatric Treatment.Need To Conceive. Can You Guide Me?
I AM SUFFERING FROM INSOMNIA FOR PAST 5 YRS. I HAVE UNDERGONE PSCHYTRIC TREATMENT FOR THE SAME BUT PROBLEM PERSISTS. I WANT TO PLAN A BABY NOW AND I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY REDUCED MOST OF MY MEDICATION BUT I HAVE NOT SLEPT NOW FOR MORE THAN A MONTH AND HALF. I NEED TO CONSULT A DOCTOR BUT DONT KNOW WHERE TO GO N WHAT TO DO. PLS GUIDE ME
Now the main issue here is how to manage your conception + subsequent pregnancy and the numerous medications used to treat insomnia and without affecting the fetus. Well now given the fact that you wish to have a baby and you know how important that is, you will need to learning how to sleep without any medications as most of those drugs will affect the child (in a negative way while still in the uterus). Now to answer your question, you will need to be seeing two doctors at ones, gynoco-obstetrician and a psychiatrist who can both join to manage both your psychosocial problem (insomnia) and your future pregnancy and in rare circumstances you might fine a gynobs who has expertise in pyschiatric problems (therefore can single handedly manage you alone).
Its good that you have reduced most of your medicines. I advise you to stop all medicines if you were taking them without consultation of doctor. Medicines for sleep are mostly addictive so they should be used only on prescription. As you are still having the problem of insomnia and you are planning to conceive so visit to a Psychiatrist is really needed. He can evaluate your problem and will advise medicines if needed.
Medicine like Ramelteon, Melatonin are non addicting and are very useful. Even in initial results ramelteon is thought to be safe in pregnancy.
Improving sleep hygiene is also must to improve sleep.
Fix your time to go to sleep.
Meditation and yoga will help to improve.
Use bed only for sleeping and not for watching TV or reading books.
Avoid tea/coffee/carbonated drinks in evening
Warm water bath is evening will also help
Try not to think about again and again because it will only increase anxiety and will ultimately worsen sleep.
So good luck and visit a psychiatrist for opinion.
Thanks
