Post Menopausal. Doctor Couldn't See Cervix During The Exam. Is This Normal?
I am a 60 year old female, not sexually active, who went for a pap smear. I am having no problems, no bleeding, discharge or pain. I have been post menopausal for several years. The doctor could not see my cervix during the painful exam, said I was very narrow, also said that she thought something was blocking my cervix. She wants me to come back for a transvaginal ultrasound. She has me worried because she couldn't see my cervix and she seemed frustrated with me. She tried a smaller speculum, but with no results. Is this normal? I have only had one sex partner in my entire life.
General & Family Physician, Dr. Vidya KR's Response
Hi, Thanks for using HCM.
This is a common finding, need not worry for this. In postmenopausal stage due to hormonal deficiency there will be atrophy of uterine organs, which is normal. During examination if you keep your pelvic muscle tight it becomes difficult to examine. You can get your ultrasound examination done as your doctors advice.
Hope this helps you
