Pregnant. Advised For A Scan. Why Is Scan Required At This Early Phase Of Pregnancy?
Hello Doctor,
My wife was tested +ve for pregnancy. She was advised to undergo some scan (anterior scan for maturity of foetus, as prescription says). She is about 6 weeks 6 days into this. Could you pl help me understand what this scan is for, as we are surprised and scared of a scan at such early phase! Thank you very much
Hello, Thanks for trusting us. This early scan is called a dating ultrasound & is very important. It is advised to confirm gestational age & to confirm fetal heart beat. It also excludes the presence of an ectopic pregnancy or an abnormal pregnancy. In upto 40% women menstrual dates are not correct & this scan is considered the most accurate method to date a pregnancy which is very important to manage a pregnancy later on if any complication arise & to interpret all the later investigations. So far it has no known adverse effects on the fetus & there is absolutely no need to get scared. Wish you all the best. Take care
Every pregnant woman has a minimum of two scans during her pregnancy...
The first one is around this time and is called dating scan... it estimates the date of delivery / it also sees the number, position and heart beats.
The second scan is at 18 to 20 weeks and is called the anomaly scan / checking for abnormalities
The scan is safe even at day 1
Believe your doctor! Why did you not ask your doctor!? – You have the right! and they have the responsibility to answer!!
Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck
