Pregnant. Blood Test Showed Low MCV And MCH. Should I Worry?

My wife is pregnant, she is in her 22 weeks. She got her blood test back. everything showed normal;wbc, neu, Lym, Mono, Eos, Baso, RBC, Hb, Hct, MCHC, RDW, PLt, MPV are all in a normal range, but her MCV and MCH are low. MCV is 71.3 and MCH is 20.2, both are below the minimum range. My wife is over sea, and the doctor is asking for my blood test result, especially for the MCV and MCH. What for? My wife said they are checking to see the baby may have anemia disorder. Is this right? Should I worry? The doctor is over sea in a third world country. I could just got see my family doctor, but I am freakin out, and now I find out I have to pay. Nice! You DOCTORS! are simple awesome. You guys and gals are the BEST! Keep up the GREAT humanitarian work!

Hi,
It seems that your wife is having Microcytic and hypochromic anemia.
By doing your blood test they might wanted to see that you are not anemic.
There are all chances having anemia to your baby as well.
There is no other idea behind asking for your blood testing.
Ok and take care.

General & Family Physician Dr. Vasudha's  Response
HI,
MCV indicates size of each red blood cell & MCHC shows haemoglobin content of each red blood cell.
The meaning of the report is your wife's red blood cells are smaller & paler.
The tests are usually done in iron defficiency anemia. Please don't bother much as long as your wife's Hb% is normal.
More over iron defficiency anemia can be very well treated. Your wife has sufficient time to go.
With eating high protein, vitamin & iron rich food, supplemented by Iron tonics as per your doctors priscribtion, your child has all the chances to have normal Hb%.
Thank you.
