Pregnant. Dog Bite. Vaccinated Against Rabies. What Are The Consequences?

Hi ! We have a home grown dog who has been vaccinated against rabies. Now, a couple of days back my brother had a heated argument with his wife. The dog felt intimidated and bit both. When she ( brothers wife ) went to see a doctor she was found to be in 1 st trimester of pregnancy. Now we are in a catch 20 situation , whether to take the injections and drop the pregnancy or go ahead with pregnancy. Is it mandatory to take injections when bitten by a dog ? Is there a possibility of contracting rabies inspire of vaccinating the dog ? Should we wait and watch for the dog to show some signs ? Every one tells his own version. What's right ?CONFUSED

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Because of the potential consequences of inadequately treated rabies exposure and limited data that indicate that fetal abnormalities have not been associated with rabies vaccination, pregnancy is not considered a contraindication to post-exposure prophylaxis.
Hope this may help
Thanks
