generally, the third trimester is considered a safe period for dental treatment. so, your wife can undergo dental procedure for the tooth that is paining. the symptoms suggest that it cannot be treated by a simple filling. whether it need a root canal or has to be extracted, depends on the extent of the cavity in the tooth which can be confirmed only by a radiograph. anaesthesia would be required for both the procedures which ideally, will not be a harm.
immeadiate relief is to take medications and get an opinion about the treatment plan with a radiograph

HI there...As you already know there are 3 trimesters in pregnancy...the first three trimesters are very important owing to the fetus development...any dental procedure is usually not recommended during this phase...in case of very severe pain you have to initially take medication if that does not subside you can as well go for extraction or root canal treatment but strictly under your gynecologist opinion...the second trimester is the safest procedure for any dental procedure or any surgical procedure for that matters...the early part of third trimester is also considered relatively safe....the reason we dont encourage excess of local anesthesia and procedures because of the risk of delivery over the chair...owing to release of few chemical components within the body that would cause relaxation of smooth muscle of uterus and caused the baby to come out...hence if handled carefully things can be managed...so second trimester is the best time to get your treament done...local anesthesia is not a strict contraindication...consult your gynecologist and talk to your dental surgeon and go ahead...all the best

Hello
Welcome to HCM
I would like to tell you that any surgical treatment is contraindicated while pregnancy.
In case of emergency treatment second trimester is safest & your wife is having 8 month pregnancy.
So I would suggest you to wait for 1 more month till delivery.
Moreover she can take Paracetamol in case of severe pain after consulting her gynaecologist.
Ask her to maintain proper oral hygiene.
Consult your dentist for further query.

Take Care

hi there

thanx for the query

first of all if your dentist has given you option for root canal therapy or extraction then always go for root canal therapy as its more important to save the tooth rather then loosing your tooth for ever. tooth loss at your age might create functional loss i.e difficulty in chewing etc. moreover each tooth is as important as any other body part.

now your scenario is little different as you are 8TH month pregnant , try to postpone it till your delivery.

moreover any of the dental procedure which involves local anesthesia or strong medication (root canal therapy/ extraction )is only done in 2nd TRIMESTER of pregnancy as that is the safe period. some dentist do take risk but it might or might not affect the baby but Why to take risk.

you can take safe medicine

RX

TAB AMPICILLIN 250 MG - BD

TAB PARACETAMOL - BD

TWICE DAILY FOR 5 DAYS after good meals only.

rinse your mouth with warm saline rinses 3-4 times a day (half cup of luke warm water + half tbs of salt to it).

in case pain still persists, visit a dentist and get a pulp caping or pulpotOMY in single sitting to avoid exertion of treatment under mild anesthesia WITHOUT ANY STRONG MEDICATION , and complete the root canal procedure post delivery.

thanx

regards and good luck for new arrival in family . take care and. GOD BLESS.

HELLO...

SORRY TO HEAR YOUR WIFE'S PAINFUL TOOTH. Its that if your wife is 8th month due, then she can't undergo any traumatic procedure . She cannot take local anesthesia and even can not undergo extraction .Any type of stress in third trimester leads to pre- mature labour and sometime ill effects on mother and baby's health.
She can take simple anti-inflammatory drugs like Combiflam , which will help relieve her pain, that too under her Gynaecologist and dental surgeon instructions.

thanks
dr deepali

Hello,
Thanks for your query.
I read your query,i would like to tell you that at the time of 8th month of pregnancy avoid any dental treatment, because it is not safe.
In root canal treatment there will be radiation exposure and local anesthesia will be given and for pain she has to take pain killers which are not prescribed during pregnancy.
And extraction is contraindicated in this case so i will suggest you post pone the treatment.
And this time she can take paracetamol for pain because it is the safest drug during pregnancy.
Nothing to get worried.
Take Care

Dentist Dr. Khushboo Bhatia's  Response
Hello,
If the your wife is in great pain and dentist recommends the tooth extraction , it can be carried out without any problem to the baby in expectant mother. Tooth extraction needs local anesthesia and if dentist wants then obstetrician can be consulted. Otherwise, administration of local anesthesia (only if administered under recommended dosage) is safe during pregnancy.

hiiii
its always better to conserve tooth than removing it, so root canal treatment would be the right decision
but in your case since your wife has gone into 3rd trimester it would be good if you can delay the treatment till the delivery as stress at this stage is not good for both mother n baby.
the local anesthetics are not used at this stage because it may cause delivery over the chair.

to provide her relive from pain you can take any anti-inflammatory drug like tab combiflam twice daily only after consulting your gynecologist
