Pregnant, Ultrasound Shows Shadow In Baby's Heart. Worried
I am20 weeks pegnant and just had my ultrasound done. I received a call from my nurse saying there was a shadow present in my baby s heart and that they want me to come in for more blood work and another ultrasound in a month. They tell me it s a soft marker and could be a birth defect. I m totally freaking out. What type of defect r they talking about. My down syndrome test during my first trimester came out negative. However, I am worried bc I do have an uncle who has down syndrome. Please help and clarify!!
Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.
They are referring, most likely, to a finding called a "left-ventricular echogenic focus". This is a common incidiental finding, but it can be associated with Down's syndrome. This is not appropriate to just get a call from a nurse. Call back and ask to speak to a doctor, or better yet, ask for a face-to-face visit to discuss this with your doctor.
I hope this helps. If you require more detail or a more prompt response, please use the Premium service. Good luck.
