Hello I am 33 weeks pregnant and have been put on tablets for high blood pressure a few days ago called adalat retard 10mg I have been experiencing weakness in my arms and my legs and also pains in my legs, before taking the tablets I was already suffering with very bad headaches and lights in my eyes but it seems to be worse and I'm not sure if it is due to the tablets or not are any of these symptoms to worry about??

Thanks for posting your query.

From the information you have provided,
You are having High BP in pregnancy. The medication is nifedipine which is commonly prescribed and safe in pregnancy.

You doctor might have told you that the definitive treatment for pre eclampsia or high BP in pregnancy is delivery. As you are only 33 weeks , we will try to take your pregnancy as far as it will go . During this time, we will give steroid injections for baby's maturity (particularly lung) as there is a chance of early delivery.

The symptoms like headache and lights in eyes could mean severe preeclampsia. These are warning signals & you need to see your doctor immediately.
You will be admitted, blood tests will be done to look for blood counts, liver and kidney function tests, scan will be done to look for baby's growth, fluid around and blood flow (doppler). Your BP also will be monitored and medicines given accordingly (tablets/injections).

If your BP is not settling or if blood tests are abnormal or if baby is not happy , then we will have to deliver you immediately. At 33 weeks it will mean caesarean section. After 36 weeks we can induce labour.

So, please meet your doctor as soon as you can.
All the best, take care!

Keep me posted about your progress !

Hi,
Nifedipine, the anti-hypertensive drug you have been prescribed is known to cause headaches, pains in the joints and weakness. You should ask for regular monitoring of your blood pressure and consider the need to switch over to another drug if the symptoms persist or become worse. Try to avoid stress, excess salt in the diet, monitor your urine output and adjust the intake of liquids accordingly. Please take rest in the left lateral position. Hope your query has been clarified. Wish you safe motherhood.
