Pregnant With Twins. Got Stage II Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. Underwent Double Mastectomy, Lat Flap Reconstruction
Hi! I am a 32 year old female who underwent a double mastectomy and lat flap reconstruction in August for Stage II Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. I had a 3 cm. Grade III tumor in my left breast. They also removed a lymph node from that side. I was found to be negative for any residual cancer, however, my oncologist recommended "turbo" chemo. $ rounds of AC chemo followed by 12 rounds of Taxol though a surgically placed power port in my chest. My concern is that I am 12 weeks pregnant with twins. I have researched and read conflicting articles that say the drugs are bad for the fetuses and then some say chemo is safe after the first trimester. Could you please clear this up for me?
My personal opinion is that you can continue with pregnancy though at the beginning of my career we were taought the same that in pregnancy chemotherapy was not good. We treated in many patients who were pregnant and they delivered safely and their children were normal. taxol therapy should not have any problem. yes there are some drugs which have mutagenic effects on the foetus but such effects should not be there with AC/T chemotherapy Dr. Ticku
