Prescribed Amoxiclav For Bacterial Infection. Dark Vomit After Taking Medicine. Need To Re-dose?

My daughter is suffering from bacterial infection (in Kidney). She is being prescribed antibiotics amoxiclav. However, she is vomiting after say 1 hour or 2 hours of taking antibiotic. What shall we do - shall we redose her or wait for next turn? Also her vomit is having some dark coloured substance - she is not taking any solid food - mostly grapes, milk, fennel seeds etc. Please suggest.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi there,

Thank you for choosing HCM for your query.

I would suggest donot redose her, since its already been an hour or two after she took her medication, and it is very unpredictable as to how much of her medication might have been absorbed unless you saw the whole tablet come out in the vomit.
Also, if she continues to vomit, then you could ask her pediatrician to prescribe her a medicine for vomiting, so she can keep her medicine down as well as some food.
Also, as you said her vomiting has dark colored substance: watch for any foods/fluids containing colors- like popsicles or flavored water or gatorade that she might have taken earlier, also monitor it closely for blood and if so take her to the doctor immediately.

When kids donot eat for prolonged periods, they may develop some gastritis especially if they have been vomiting alot, you can discuss with your doctor the need for an antacid for a few days alongwith the medication for vomiting.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
