Prescribed Ibuprofen, Lortab, Keflex After Root Canal. Have Ankle Sprain. Should Lortab Be Taken?

I had a root canal last monday (1 wk ago today) and was prescribed ibuprofen 800, lortab 7.5 and keflex 500 mg and did not realize until today that I am only supposed to take the ibuprofen every 8 hours and have been taking all 3 for several days now every 4 hours because I fell saturday and sprained my ankle pretty bad and have more pain w ankle than tooth, but his morning I became and stayed nauseous all day after meds, so have laid off all meds except for dose this morning around 8:00 am. I am in pain now, but worried about taking more drugs and am not used to taking hardly any ever and with doubling up on ibuprofen it concerns me! Can I just take lortab or something other than ibuprofen...I still feel a little nauseous!
Thanks!

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

This is to just to let you know that Lortab causes more nausea than Ibuprofen.

The conservative management of ankle sprain is as follows -

* Protection in the form of a splint or cast boot
* Avoid bearing weight on the injured leg and give adequate rest
* Ice packing of the injured area once in 2 hours
* Elevation of the limb with active toe movements
* Elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Simple analgesic like acetaminophen will help

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Hi,

You can treat this at home by rest, leg elevation, ice compresses, anti-inflammatory painkillers. You should not move foot or stand on it till pain subside.

So try to rest strictly for 24-36 hours after injury and then stretch or stand on feet till limit of pain. After this time also you can warm up your ankle.

You should be all right considerably within next 3 to 4 days.
If there is no improvement or if pain increases, then you are advised to consult a doctor as it could be a torn ligament.
