Prescribed Lactulose, But Stools Have Become Black. Is This Normal ?

Hi, my son has been prescribed lactulose which I have been giving to him but now his stools are black. I just wondered if this is a normal side effect or if I should be concerned. He had a stoma reversal and so his surgeon wanted to prevent any stool build up from continuing as he had felt soem minimal build up at my son's last check up.

hello

As you have described that your son had a reversal of stoma meaning rejoining of the intestine which in some cases can cause mild bleeding due to stitches in place
they can cause mild bleed

lactulose doesnot causes black stool , just a stool softner

when blood comes from high above intestine or stoma it becomes black and hence black stool means you need to take her to same surgeon to see the sight of bleed.

i hope this helps

take care
