I had TKR seven mos ago. the pain is terrible I can't sleep and nothing stops the pain. I have a prickling feeling and feels like thousands of pins sticking in my knee at the same time. It hurts so bad. Drs. have given me pain meds. but they don't work. It has been mos. since I've had any sleep to mention. what can I do? My surgeon that did this says I'm not exercising enough. I exercise every day and take whirlpool baths. Nothing works. Please help me!!!!!!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The pain after TKR surgery should gradually wane off within 2-3 months and every patient should be pain free afterwards.

The presence of pain in the knee even 7 months after TKR surgery indicates some problem. It needs a detailed clinical examination and appropriate investigations to exactly determine the cause of pain.

If your pain is present continuously without any relation to the movements of the knee joint, then it is likely due to infection unless proved otherwise.

So, I suggest you to consult an arthroplasty surgeon for a detailed workup and further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hi,

Infection is always at the top of the list in the surgeon's mind (or should be) when investigating continuing pain after knee replacement.
Instability can be associated with continued pain after knee replacement.
Impingement causes a specific type of pain - a sudden severe stabbing pain on movement - because of soft tissues getting nipped in the prosthesis.

You should visit your surgeon and it evaluated, so that you can get the treatment as early as possible.
