Protein In Urine, Hypertension. Taking Lisinopril. Suffer From Cough. Should I Change Medication To Benicar?

I was taking linsinapril for protein in my urine and blood pressure . Everything worked great except for the cough . Used it for about 7 years. Then some protein started to be in my urine. I ws switched over to Benicar(40 mg) and everything was good. No cough, no protein in my urine ratio was 30. BP was 110/70.I used BEnicar for 5 years. My doctor then switched me to Cozaar(25 mg) for less cost(generic). I took it for 5 months and my BP was 135/70 and I have protein in my urine.(454 mg/liter) My doctor then increased the dosage to 50 mg and it has been a month now. My BP is 122/70 and the protein has decresed (ratio is 300) (124mg/liter). Will the Cozaar work as well as the Benicar in getting my ratio to 30 eventually? Or should I switch back to Benicar? Does it just take more time for the Cozaar to work as well as the Benicar?

Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

Both the drugs (Benicar / Cozaar) belong to the same family.
The effect is a class action, with minor differences only.

The protein in urine needs good pressure control.
In spite of that may increase with time due to the progression of the underlying disease...
You need follow up by Nephrologist.

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck

Hello!

Thanks for posting your query.

Benicar and Cozaar both drugs are of same class of anti-hypertensive.Benicar contains olmesartan and cozaar contains losartan .Both of them are Angiotensin receptor antagonist.

Mechanism of action and side effects of both the drugs are similar hence there will not be any added benefit of changing from one to another. It is the cost and availability that matters for choosing one.

Lisinopril is a angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor which increases bradykinin levels in lungs and blood which causes chronic dry cough.Because of this reason your had changed lisinopril to benicar or cozaar.

Benicar and Cozaar both has same efficacy for hypertension and proteinuria. So continue the same drug (cozaar) that your doctor has advised and maintain blood pressure below 120/80 m of Hg.

Hope this could help you better.

Wish you good health.
