Quit Smoking, Diminished Sense Of Taste, Burnt Sensation On Tongue. Usual?

After smoking for over 30 years I stopped smoking 4 months ago. One of the side effects seems to be that I have a diminished sense of taste. Foods I enjoyed before now taste bland. Also, my tongue feels like I had burned it. Like when you might eat or drink something too hot. Is this something "unusual"? Will it improve over time, or should I see my doctor?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Firstly, congratulations on quitting smoking; it is never too late. There are some symptoms of 'withdrawal' from smoking too; but they do not last for 4 months. So this is not associated with your smoking cessation. Rather your tongue symptoms could be due to a deficiency; such as Vitamins. Try taking multivitamin pills every day. If it does not improve visit a doctor for a thorough examination.

Sreenivasan
